Not afraid. Not a monster

Riz sighed as he sat down. He was just so... tired. He hadn’t felt this tired since he was a small child and his entire head ached with it.  

Beside him, Baron sat, swinging their legs. Their knee hinges creeked with each movement. When Riz looked over, Baron was looking at him, their cracked face perfectly still, their mouth forever frozen in a small smile. 

“Why are you still here?” Riz asked wearily. 

“You created me, your Romance Partner, because you were afraid,” Baron said, as if he were describing the weather. “Are you still afraid, Riz Gukgak?” 

Baron cocked his head a little as he asked the question, then froze, waiting for a response. 

Riz turned away. “No,” he said. But he knew that wasn’t true. If it were true, Baron wouldn’t be here. 

He didn’t even understand what he was afraid of. So he wasn’t in a relationship. At that point in time, only one of his friends were even in a relationship. And he wasn’t even sure if Fig counted because Ayda wasn’t exactly “at that point in time”. Nobody was getting their kisses in, and nobody else seemed to be so scared of hiding that fact. 

Riz knew he wasn’t afraid of that. Because he’d told his friends that Baron wasn’t real. He told them that at the start of their Spring Break. Baron had been real to them for all of five seconds. His friends all knew he wasn’t in a relationship, and he wasn’t afraid of that, or even ashamed of that. 

Who wanted to be in a relationship anyway? He didn’t have time for that. Who wanted the heart break? He’d seen how Kristen spiralled after the break up with Tracker, somehow becoming even more unstable. He’d seen how upset Gorgug was, even though he tried to hide it. Even Fig, still in a relationship, was upset that she couldn’t see Ayda.  

Riz looked over at Baron again. Their head was now twisted upside down, and Riz realised he hadn’t stopped cocking his head after all. He didn’t jump, just looked at his Romance Partner and looked away again. It wasn’t scary, it was just Baron being Baron. 

Baron wasn’t scary. Not really. So he could climb up walls and twist his head about. It wasn’t any more creepy than a giant spider, and Oisin and his friends had been stomping on them for years. Yeah, the doll face was a little unnerving but with everything Riz had been through for the past two years, it was nothing special. Baby probably creeped him out more. 

“It is not my appearance that you are afraid of, Riz Gukgak,” Baron said, reading his thoughts.  

“No, I’m not afraid of you,” Riz said, quietly. 

“You are afraid of me, but not of my appearance,” Baron said. “Why do you think that is?” 

He needed to go to bed. He had aviation club in four hours and he needed to sleep before then, or his mom was going to be so frustrated. Riz knew she was almost as overworked as he was, and he didn’t want to give her another thing to worry about. 

Riz began to change into something more comfortable so he could sleep, but his thoughts continued to wander. 

He didn’t have time for a relationship right now, but he would have one eventually. He didn’t know if it would be with a guy or a girl or something else. He was open to anything, he just hadn’t seen anybody he liked yet. But he’d find a partner, and they’d have a couple of kids, once he’d gotten a job and everything, of course. Whoever he married, it would be someone badass. Like he’d told his mom, they were a family of goblin badasses. And then he’d have a cool kid to pass on his spy knowledge to. Not right now, but someday. In the future. 

“It is very rude to plan your future with someone else when your Romance Partner is sitting right here,” Baron said, swinging their legs again. 

“I didn’t even say who my partner would be,” Riz said with a small smile. “You don’t think you’re a badass?” 

“You do not like me,” Baron said. “Your Romance Partner deserves better treatment than to hear you say that.” 

Riz didn’t respond. He climbed into bed and lay down, closing his eyes but sleep wouldn’t come.  

“You are afraid, Riz Gukgak, that you will never find anybody you like,” Baron said from the end of the bed.  

“Go to sleep, Baron.” 

“What was that spell your principal cast on you at the Frostyfaire Folk Festival?” Baron asked. 

“What?” Riz asked, sitting up. 

“He cast dominate monster,” Baron said. “Do you not wonder why that spell was able to work on you, Riz Gukgak?” 

Riz shrugged. “Because he’s a racist?”  

“Perhaps,” Baron said. He brought his legs up so that he was kneeling on the bed, staring at Riz with those frozen, unblinking eyes. “Or perhaps because he knows. It is not that you are a goblin that makes you a monster. What is more monstrous than somebody who cannot feel love?” 

Riz stared at Baron. Baron stared back. He hadn’t thought of that. He purposefully hadn’t thought of that.  

He felt love. He loved his friends. He loved his parents. He loved Penny. He loved... 

“That is not what I am talking about,” Baron said. “You know that. They will all find Romance Partners, and spend the rest of their lives with them. How often does your mother spend time with her high school friends? Who do these people go home to at night? Their Romance Partners. But you will not have one, because you are a monster, Riz Gukgak. And then who will you go home to?” 

“I just haven’t found the right person yet,” Riz argued. 

“You have not found any person yet.” 

“I’m not a monster,” Riz said quietly. “And I’m not going to be alone.” 

“Of course you will not be alone,” Baron said, shifting forward so he could crawl up the bed. “You will always have me.” 

The alarm on Riz’ crystal woke him up. Baron was gone. He stared up at the ceiling for a few moments, gathering his thoughts. He wasn’t afraid and he wasn’t a monster. He just didn’t have time for this.

Percy/Vex

When I started shipping them: hard to say in that I went into C1 knowing how the general ships shook out. I do remember loving their interaction when Percy first tells VM about the Briarwoods and Vex immediately is like "oh this is 100% our problem now too",

What makes me happy about them: everything. My ideal for fictional romances is truly "we are flawed in the same way, but through each other we can see how we are worthy of love despite that" so like, this is my fucking jam.

What makes me sad about them: not much, honestly! lifespan angst was made up by mediocre fanfic writers to sell more mediocre fanfic.

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: nothing specific to them; in general I am a very "he would not fucking say that" person when it comes to fanfic so getting the voices right is crucial, but that's always true for any ship.

Things I look for in fanfic: see above; get the voices right.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: I mean, they are perfect for each other and no other ships for either of them compare, but I would not be mad at Percy/Tary or Vex/Zahra.

My happily ever after for them: they've got it! Percy just wants to do weird science in a workshop while a competent partner does all the political work; Vex wants the security that power grants her after a childhood and young adulthood of profound instability and emotional abuse, and both want someone who loves even their more vengeful and complicated side, and that's what they're doing!

Fig Faeth

How I feel about this character: She is great. Love how Emily leaned into Angry Teen in a way that felt real and understandable.

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Ayda

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: I mean, all the bad kids, but Riz and Kristen are some of my favorites. Also her relationship with Gilear is wonderful.

My unpopular opinion about this character: None really?

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Nothing specific other than "please give us a third season one day, please d20 cast, please"

Favorite friendship for this character: Probably Riz; Emily and Murph as players are hilarious in that they NEVER explore romantic chemistry despite being irl married, but their characters almost always end up really good friends.

1. First ship

It’s a tie between Aladdin/Jasmine and Simba/Nala, because I saw both of these movies about the same time as a little kid. And my sixth birthday cake had a picture of Aladdin and Jasmine on it, and I used to tell stories about them to myself on the playground, but I had plushies of baby Simba and Nala with magnetic noses that could “kiss.” 

2. First OTP

I am taking this to mean “first fic you felt strongly enough about to produce content for or engage with in a creative/fandom way,” in which case that would be Michael/Mia from The Princess Diaries. I wrote one (1) bad fanfic when I was 13 (about how Michael proposed and then Grandmere threw a fit BUT then he saved her life while they were horseback riding) that’s still on ff dot net somewhere, and I read basically every fanfic for them that was available on ff dot net. I still have an enormous soft spot for them and I reread the books every few years.

3. Current favorite ship

Since I’m on a Dimension 20 kick right now, even though I haven’t read much fanfic yet I’m going to say both Fig/Ayda from Fantasy High and Ricky/Esther/Sofia from The Unsleeping City. Fig/Ayda is incredibly cute because Fig is a tiefling with shapechanging ability who had a string of questionable romantic encounters with much older men before meeting Ayda, the teenage curator of a magic library who is also an autistic Black phoenix. Fig is very impulsive and brash, but also emotionally closed-off and insecure, but she starts bonding with Ayda because Ayda thinks she’s really cool and admires her bravado. Fig doesn’t know what to do with someone who’s so intimidating but cool who seems to really like her, and, well, you can watch this scene where they get together, it’s very good. It contains Fig vomiting into a bush, then saying “I think you’re perfect the way you are,” then skateboarding away in a panic. It’s maybe the most accurate sapphic rep I’ve ever seen.

Ricky/Esther are just two incredibly nice people who get together in The Unsleeping City, but I think that they should also get together with their friend Sofia because of reasons. I genuinely think the canon supports this reading quite a bit.

4. Your ship since the first minute

I have a fun story for this, which is that literally since day 1 of Korra, I wanted her to have a girlfriend (post date: 12/7/11), and the second Asami showed up I was like eyes emoji. And then I dropped off the show after the first season for a few reasons, kind of assuming they would never do an f/f couple and casually shipping Korrasami sort of out of spite, but THEN my friend messaged me immediately after the finale like DUDE YOU’LL NEVER BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED. And that was honestly one of the emotional high points of my fandom life.

5. Ship(s) you wish had been endgame

I have...many! Bering and Wells from Warehouse 13 is paramount, obviously, because that is a wound in my soul from which I will never recover. Cartinelli from Agent Carter slightly less so, but I think that was truly the last time that I had real hope for a canon f/f ship. I think Matt/Foggy/Karen should have all been romantic together because Matt/Karen by themselves has weird vibes and I don’t like it. Obviously I think Fitz should have died in the series finale and Skimmons should have been canon, and as far as I’m concerned he died of a brain tumor after that and then they got together. (Daniel is also involved still, he’s a chill dude and I like him and it’s fine.) 

6. Ship you wish was canon

Grace/Dani from Terminator: Dark Fate, because wow did they shoehorn in an incredibly hilarious attempt at mommyzoning Dani (didn’t work, it’s still gay fuckos). But it would’ve been nice if they’d just leaned into it and let the horny lesbian ghost that possessed the screenwriters make it explicitly gay. Also I think Cameron/Donna and Gordon/Joe from Halt and Catch Fire should have been canon because that show is already basically about the world’s messiest polycule anyway, and Joe is canon bi and already treats Gordon like a booty call, and Cameron and Donna act like either romantic partners or bitter/awkward exes, so like. c’mon. Also I think Daisy/Robbie should have been a thing.

7. Ship that most of the fandom hates but you love

Natasha/Bruce is cute COME AT ME. Age of Ultron is a bad movie but they could have been cute!!!!

8. You don’t even watch the show, but you ship it

Uhhhh. Most things I end up secondhand shipping I end up consuming the canon for eventually lol. I was secondhand shipping Cameron/Donna from Halt and Catch Fire last year because my friend was watching it but then I just...also watched it lol. Uhhhh. The Killing Eve lesbians seem fun I guess? I’ll get to that eventually.

9. Ship you wish had a different storyline

I’m digging deep for this one, but Buffy/Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I think they had SUCH a cool dynamic that kind of stopped getting explored after season 4, and it’s a bummer. I don’t think they’re like, endgame or true love or anything, but I think they’re sort of the messy pair that can’t completely disentangle from each other, and maybe they don’t even really want to? I think that they couldn’t live in the same house or anything but that they meet up and hang out and probably fuck every couple years, and it’s good.

10. Favorite ship(s) that’s endgame

GAMBIT/ROGUE GOT MARRIED IN THE COMICS. I’M SO PSYCHED. I don’t know if Karolina/Nico from Runaways counts as endgame but I love them, and I also love Gert/Chase. I’m rewatching Nikita and am delighted to know that Michael/Nikita is still very good. Priya/Tony from Dollhouse is also very good. Daisy/Daniel was honestly the best outcome SHIELD could have realistically given me and I was quite happy with it. I don’t know if Magnus Archives ships count but I really like Georgie/Melanie (we stan sapphic accidental apocalypse cult leaders). Oh and I like all the canon Avatar: The Last Airbender ships too.

I don't know if anyone particularly cared but I care so have a bullet fic about the Bad Kids playing stardew valley.

Gorgug introduced them to the game

He has a wonderful farm he has many hours put into

It's all nice and orderly

He also has one with Zelda

They are married

He is lowkey scared of the mines so Zelda did have to do the skull cavern runs so they could make a ring

Fig is who went into the files and changed the max player limit to 6

She goes on and on about how she Hacked The Game

Adaine always says Not Really

Fig just says she's a hacker even louder

Kristen asks for a spot for Tracker

Gorgug asks for one for Zelda

Fig realizes she wants one for Ayda

They install the unlimited players mod

They use the four corners farm, for the space

Split funds because yes, they love and trust everyone with their lives, but in no way are they sharing funds together

They all know someone will sneak off and buy the return scepter from Krobus the moment they get 2mil

Everyone fights over the farm name

Except none of them actually have any idea what to name it

So it just ends up as Baddy Farm

But once that discussion ends

They start fighting over dog or cat

They eventually settle on the gray cat

(He is named Hangman because Fabian steals the keyboard to do it)

And then it's time to farm!

Fabian plants whatever he thinks is cool, and then once the mines open up he immediately stops farming

Gorgug lives a balanced farmer life, using his knowledge to be relatively profitable but he plays really relaxed

Fig joins Fabian in the mines but spends a lot more time wooing the villagers

Kristen wants animals. She is saving up for animals. She cried when Gorgug gave her a dinosaur egg to incubate

Riz and Adaine though

Riz and Adaine have multi paged google docs detailing the best ways to spend their seasons

Adaine stresses very much on finishing the community center year one no matter how much Gorgug tells her year two is good too

Riz uses all the fences

He sectioned everyone their own plot of land

Tries to start a community storage area with color coded chests

Tries to set some ground rules for their farm

Adaine listens, Gorgug tries, everyone else enables chaos

They all play exclusively at 2-4am

Or during school time

Nobody wants to marry the same people

But they still fight about it

Somehow, someway, it still becomes a fairly organized, productive, and profitable farm and they're all proud of it

U know what? Fig and Ayda will get married and anyone who says otherwise is WRONG

If Jawbone and Sandra Lyn were to end up getting married then Fig and Adaine would be sisters right?

And if down the line Tracker and Kristen get married Kristen would be like their cousin-in-law?? (Is that a thing? Whatever I decided it’s a thing)

Also if Ayda and Fig get married Ayda would be Adaine’s sister-in-law

Anyways what I’m getting at is Adaine would go from having 1 sister to no sisters to getting that sister back to then gaining two more sisters (and two essentially sisters technically cousins)

Ten A’Penny

Basically, a whole lot of Adaine pining, because before the glory that is Fig/Ayda materialized on my screen, I definitely was feeling pangs for Adaine/Fig and Adaine/Ayda. cw. mild internalized homophobia.

There are times she catches herself in a loop, over and over, different words than the ones she used to know. When she was younger, it might have been ‘stupid, so stupid’ or ‘do better, be better, try harder this time’. Now it’s the same thing, over and over and over again, in a cycle that even the meds can’t break.

(I love her, I love her, I love her-)

(but not like that)

Ayda says, “We are best friends,”

Adaine responds, “We are best friends,” and worries, when she has the presence of mind to think through the matter properly.

This is how it started, before.

They’re picking out rooms today. Adaine has the tower - a classic wizard’s choice. Isolation, peace and quiet, and friendly faces downstairs whenever she wants them. It’s the perfect compromise.

Fig takes the living room. A central space - unavoidable.

Adaine doesn’t want to avoid her.

She wonders, up in her tower, with books spread across each knee and a pencil in her mouth, which of the secret passages goes that way. Which one she would have to take, to reach-

And bites down hard, and goes back to work, lead painting her wicked tongue grey all the while.

They’re leaving soon, like Aguefort said, and then she won’t have to worry about it anymore.

She could talk to Kristen. She knows she could. She could ask, and Kristen would answer, in far more detail than she ever wanted. Or Tracker, maybe, but Adaine is closer to Kristen, so it would be more appropriate to ask her.

(As if there’s anything appropriate about this.)

But Adaine watches Kristen and Tracker together, always together, attached at the hip together, and loses her nerve every time.

They make it look so easy. And she knows, she knows that Kristen took time to get there, but she’s so sure now. She’s so sure, and Adaine is… not.

If this is really what she feels, shouldn’t it be easier, at least to know?

(The meds are working, so why doesn’t she feel better by now?)

It was easier, before. When Fig came home with cherry-stained lips from the mouths of middle-aged men, at least then there was a reason for Adaine to stay silent. She knew the type of person Fig liked to kiss, Adaine would never have a beer gut or a moustache or a six-figure salary, tied up in pension plans and gambling habits on the side.

Then Fig starts coming home with burnt lips, and scorched cheeks, and red skin made redder by the fire that held it close, promising things like ‘love’ and ‘girlfriends’ and ‘when we get married, someday’.

And Adaine can’t pretend anymore, that it was Fig who was the reason it never would have worked.

They’re a good team, her and Riz. They have the same priorities: clues, knowledge, the scientific method. He proposes a question and she answers it, or vice versa, and they find the answers twice as quick. She likes him. She likes spending time with him.

She likes him.

And so every moment together becomes an investigation, only it’s her body that holds the clues.

When he looks at her, does her heart race? No, but she’s not disgusted either. When he claps her on the shoulder in excitement - or the back, where he can reach more easily - does she shy away from the touch? No, and isn’t that progress? She couldn’t handle people touching her, before. That’s a sign, surely.

When they’re sleepy together, lying side by side and worn out from another mental marathon, and she turns her head - does she want to kiss him?

No.

No, no-

But you can be attracted to someone and not want to kiss them. Maybe what she feels is deeper than that. So deep, she can’t find any evidence of it… yet.

More investigation is still needed, clearly.

They’re a good team, her and Ayda.

In the Synod, they while away the time together. Which is to say, they put the time to its highest and best use. Spellbooks lie open between them, instead of on Adaine’s knees - shared, for the first time in her life, and look how much progress they’re making. Soon, they’ll have developed three new spells, jointly. What will they call the latest? Aberfort’s Dream Dimension? Augenant’s Wising Window? Adayda’s Portent?

See, no matter how you spin it, their names fit so well together. They both like the symmetry. Symmetry is what makes the world make sense.

That’s another reason they’re a good team. They help each other make sense of the world, that so often confuses the both of them.

When the books are away, Ayda talks about Fig. Fig this and Fig that, and Adaine always tries to call her attention back to their work, when she can, so she doesn’t have to watch the way Ayda smoulders when she talks about Fig - how her eyes flash in time with her hair, how sparks dance on her fingertips, how she glows so much brighter than Adaine’s own dull flaxen appearance.

Because she’s jealous. She can admit that much, by now. She’s just lost track of who she’s jealous of.

Ayda says, “We are best friends,” and Adaine thinks, I love you, I love you, I love you-

And because they are best friends - she knows how to be best friends, that’s all she’s ever known - Adaine says nothing at all.
